Rwandan President Paul Kagame has congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni upon his re-election as President of the Republic of Uganda, describing the outcome as a renewed mandate from the Ugandan people and an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

In a congratulatory message, President Kagame conveyed his best wishes to President Museveni and to the people of Uganda as they enter a new term of leadership.

“Congratulations President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on your re-election as President of the Republic of Uganda. I extend my best wishes to you and the people of Uganda as you continue to serve your nation for the prosperity of your people,” President Kagame said.

Uganda concluded its presidential election earlier this month, with the Electoral Commission declaring Museveni the winner after securing over 70 percent of the valid votes cast, giving him another five-year term in office. Museveni, who has led Uganda since 1986, ran on a platform focused on economic transformation, infrastructure development, and regional stability.

Commitment to Strong Bilateral Ties

President Kagame emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between Rwanda and Uganda, two countries whose histories, economies, and security interests are closely linked.

“I look forward to the continued strong and productive cooperation between our two countries,” Kagame added.

Relations between Kigali and Kampala have in recent years shown steady improvement, marked by renewed diplomatic engagement, cross-border cooperation, and dialogue on regional security. Both leaders have repeatedly stressed that peaceful coexistence and cooperation are essential for prosperity in the Great Lakes region.

Regional Stability and Shared Interests

Rwanda and Uganda are key players in East Africa and have a shared interest in trade, infrastructure connectivity, and peace initiatives within the region. Their cooperation is also significant within regional frameworks that aim to promote economic integration and collective security.

President Kagame’s message places Museveni’s re-election within this broader regional context, signaling Rwanda’s readiness to work closely with Uganda as it pursues its national development agenda over the next term.

Looking Ahead

The congratulatory message from Kigali adds to a series of regional and international acknowledgements following Museveni’s victory. It underscores the expectation that Uganda and Rwanda will continue engaging constructively, strengthening diplomatic ties, and working together for stability and economic growth that benefits their peoples.
