Jamie Lee Curtis, the Oscar-winning actress, has taken down a post expressing support for Israel after a public controversy emerged over its content.
Curtis, aged 64, shared several posts expressing her solidarity with Israel in response to a recent attack launched by the militant group Hamas on the country from Gaza. One of her posts featured a photo of frightened children looking at missiles in the sky, accompanied by an Israeli flag, with the caption “Terror from the skies” intended to garner support for Israel.
However, the photograph, taken by Samar Abu Elouf, was later clarified to depict Palestinian children in Gaza fleeing from counter-launched bombs by Israel. This prompted Curtis to delete the post.
Samar Abu Elouf, who originally shared the image on her Instagram, described the situation, saying, “Palestinian families seek refuge with their children from the northern Gaza Trip to UNRWA schools inside Gaza City. Children are afraid of the sound of bombing who hear it during their presence due to events on the Strip’s borders.”
Jamie Lee Curtis is not the only high-profile figure who faced criticism for posts regarding the Israel-Gaza conflict. Kylie Jenner, aged 26, briefly posted a photo of the Israeli flag on her Instagram story with the message “Now and always, we stand with the people of Israel!” The post was removed less than an hour later.
Critics on social media challenged celebrities like Jenner to provide more informed perspectives on the longstanding political and territorial conflict between Israel and Palestine. Some questioned their understanding of the geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Other prominent individuals, including Ashley Tisdale, Sofia Richie, and Nina Dobrev, also shared pro-Israel posts.
Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, firing thousands of rockets from Gaza, resulting in numerous casualties and captives. Israel reported that over 600 Israelis were killed, with more than 2,000 injured, including 44 soldiers.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the nation was “at war” with Hamas as it engaged militants in southern Israel and conducted airstrikes in Gaza. Israel’s Major General Ghasan Alyan held Hamas responsible for the escalation and consequences.
It is worth noting that Hamas is designated as a terrorist organization by several countries, including Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
