MBARARA, Uganda — Police in Mbarara have intercepted a minibus taxi, registration number UA 667DN, that was transporting 35 students in dangerously unsafe conditions along the Ibanda–Kasese route.
According to authorities, the vehicle, licensed to carry only 14 passengers, was overloaded with students aged between 15 and 21. In addition to the excess passengers, the taxi was also carrying jerrycans of petrol, with some students reportedly seated on the fuel containers while others were positioned on top of the vehicle.
Police described the situation as highly hazardous, warning that it could have easily resulted in a serious fire outbreak or fatal accident.
The driver was immediately arrested and is currently detained at Mbarara Central Police Station, where he awaits court action.
Authorities have since begun making safer and more appropriate transport arrangements to ensure the affected students reach their destination without further risk.
Police credited a whistleblower for alerting them in time, enabling officers to intercept the vehicle before the driver could evade enforcement through alternative routes.
Law enforcement officials have strongly condemned the incident, emphasizing that safety on the roads must never be compromised. They warned motorists against overloading vehicles and transporting flammable substances alongside passengers, particularly children.
The incident comes as the holiday travel season begins, a period typically marked by increased movement of students across the country.
Police say they are intensifying surveillance and enforcement to curb reckless practices that endanger lives.
