LIRA, NORTHERN UGANDA – Makerere University’s College of Education and External Studies, through the Centre for Lifelong Learning, has announced a call for applications for the August 2026 intake at its Lira Study Centre, offering a wide range of certificate, diploma, and short courses examined by the Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB) and Makerere University itself.
In a strong appeal to parents and guardians across Northern Uganda, the Centre Coordinator, Mr. Patrick Atyeng, urged families to prioritise enrolling their children at the centre, saying it has set new standards in education and emerged as a true centre of academic excellence.
“Parents in the North should take advantage of this opportunity. Makerere University Lira Centre is no longer just a distant dream. We have transformed into a modern, high-quality learning hub,” Atyeng said.
According to a message from the Principal of the College of Education and External Studies, the centre is committed to providing flexible, accessible, and quality lifelong learning that empowers individuals, strengthens communities, and transforms lives.
TUITION & PROGRAMMES
The centre offers two-year diploma courses at UGX 500,000 per semester, including:
• National Diploma in Accountancy
• Business Management
• Records and Information Management
• Public Administration and Management
• Information and Communications Technology
• Secretarial and Office Management
Entry requirement for diplomas: At least one principal pass and two subsidiary passes at A-Level or equivalent.
Two-year certificate courses cost UGX 400,000 per semester and include:
• National Certificate in Accounting and Finance
• Public Administration and Management
• Business Administration and Management
• Information and Communications Technology
• Records and Information Management
Entry requirement for certificates: At least six passes at O-Level or recognised post-primary training.
SHORT COURSES AWARDED BY MAKERERE UNIVERSITY
The centre also runs two-to-three-month short courses in Administrative Law, Kiswahili Language, and Computer Applications, all awarded directly by Makerere University.
MODERN FACILITIES & CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT
Atyeng further highlighted that the centre now boasts a conducive learning environment, modern learning facilities, a well-equipped computer laboratory, and a well-resourced academic centre — all designed to give students in Lira and surrounding districts a learning experience comparable to that of the main campus in Kampala.
“We have invested in infrastructure and learning resources. Any student who joins us will find a serious and supportive environment for academic success,” he added.
