MOROTO – Police in Moroto District have launched a manhunt for the driver of a trailer attached to Yaobai Cement Factory who allegedly fled after being involved in a road crash that claimed the life of a police officer.
The fatal accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon along the Moroto–Soroti Road, opposite Yaobai Cement Factory in Nadunget Sub-county.
According to the Mt. Moroto Regional Police spokesperson, Mike Longole, the deceased has been identified as Police Constable Isaac Ogira, who was attached to the Anti Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) Moroto Zonal Headquarters.
Longole said the officer was riding a Yamaha YBR motorcycle, registration number UP 8113, from the Nadunget ASTU Police Barracks towards Moroto Town when he collided with a trailer that was joining the main road from the cement factory premises.
The trailer involved in the crash, a white CHACKMAN truck bearing registration number UA 783EZ, was allegedly driven by a man who fled the scene immediately after the collision.
Police said Constable Ogira sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
Preliminary investigations point to careless driving by the trailer driver as the suspected cause of the crash.
Traffic police and scene-of-crime officers responded to the incident, documented the scene, and transported the deceased’s body to Moroto Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
The motorcycle and the trailer were towed to Moroto Central Police Station to aid ongoing investigations.
Police have appealed to members of the public to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of the driver, urging anyone with relevant details to report to Moroto Central Police Station, the nearest police station, or the ASTU Zonal Headquarters in Nadunget.
Longole also reminded motorists to exercise extra caution when entering major roads, emphasizing that adherence to traffic regulations is essential in preventing road crashes and saving lives.
