Mbarara City — The National Unity Platform (NUP) will not have a candidate contesting for any Local Council One (LC1) chairperson position in Mbarara City during the elections scheduled for 28th July 2026.
The party’s only nominated candidate, Brian Muhimbise, who had been cleared to contest for the LC1 chairperson seat of Rucece Cell in Rwakishakizi Ward, Mbarara South Division, has officially withdrawn from the race.
Muhimbise’s withdrawal means NUP will not be represented in the LC1 chairperson elections anywhere in Mbarara City.
The development comes just days before Ugandans head to the polls to elect village-level leaders across the country. LC1 chairpersons play a key role in grassroots governance, including mobilising communities, resolving local disputes, and coordinating government programmes at the village level.
With NUP now out of the race in Mbarara City, the contest for LC1 chairperson positions will be left to candidates from other political parties and independents.
The LC1 elections are scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 28th July 2026, as part of Uganda’s ongoing local government electoral process.
