BUSHENYI, Uganda – Bushenyi District has interdicted its long-serving engineer, Barnabas Mbonimpa, over allegations of theft and mismanagement of road funds, in a move district leaders say is part of efforts to eliminate corruption in local government.
Mbonimpa, who has served as an engineer in the greater Bushenyi area for more than 30 years, was reportedly interdicted this week following concerns over the management of funds allocated for road works in the district.
Bushenyi District Chairperson Prosper Twebaze confirmed the interdiction, saying the decision followed what he described as persistent theft of road funds over the years.
Twebaze said he was unwilling to continue working with officials involved in corruption, insisting that his administration was committed to ensuring accountability in the use of public resources.
He further described his current term of office as one without corruption, saying his leadership would not tolerate individuals accused of misusing government funds.
Mbonimpa reportedly took over engineering responsibilities in the greater Bushenyi area around 1997 and has remained a key figure in the district’s engineering department for decades. He currently holds the rank of Assistant Commissioner.
The interdiction comes as the government intensifies its campaign against corruption in local governments, particularly in the management of public funds allocated for infrastructure development.
Minister for Local Government Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi is expected to visit Bushenyi District on Friday, November 6, 2026, as part of his ongoing regional campaign against corruption.
In a post on X, the minister announced a series of anti-corruption rallies across the Ankole sub-region under the second phase of the “Expose the Corrupt” campaign.
According to his programme, the campaign began with a rally in Rubirizi District, followed by Bushenyi on Friday, Sheema on Saturday and Mbarara District on Sunday.
The minister also listed planned visits to Ibanda, Kazo, Kiruhura, Isingiro, Lyantonde and Rwampara districts as part of the wider mobilisation against corruption.
The campaign is intended to expose alleged corruption, promote accountability and strengthen the fight against the misuse of public resources in local governments.
