The Member of Parliament (MP) for Lira City West Division, Honourable Obong Eyit Vincent Shedrick, has paid tribute to the late Mayor Ogwal Achonga, describing him as a dedicated UPC mobilizer whose legacy will endure in the memories of hundreds of people in the Lango sub-region.
MP Obong Vincent Eyit spoke to the media after attending the burial of Mayor Ogwal Achonga (RIP) on Friday in Aler, Ngetta, Lira City. He remembered Ogwal Achonga as a true “political bulldozer” and a committed leader who was widely recognized as “Ocoromac” in the realm of UPC party mobilization.
Obong Vincent Eyit highlighted Ogwal Achonga’s significant contributions, noting that he was a staunch supporter of the UPC and had made substantial contributions to the development of the Catholic Church, especially St. Jude, located in Ojwina, Lira City West Division. He also mentioned that Achonga’s Christian values had a profound impact on the younger generation of Christians in Lira City and the greater Lira district, within the Lango sub-region.
MP Shedrick Obong Eyit expressed his condolences, stating, “We have lost a courageous, multi-talented, brilliant sportsman, a man of unwavering faith in God throughout his leadership.” He also described Achonga as a dedicated and hardworking UPC cadre.
Honourable Obong Vincent Shedrick added, “It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of our elder and hero, a long-serving UPC member who was a dedicated mobilizer for the People’s Congress party. I pray that the Almighty God provides comfort to his wife and children during this most challenging time of grief.”
Honourable Vincent Shedrick shared a memory of Mayor Michael’s strong affiliation with the Catholic denomination, even until the time of his passing. He also mentioned that Mike Ogwal was the first elected mayor of Lira City West Division and succumbed to cancer after a prolonged illness.
According to the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party president, Jimmy Michael Akena, he recalled his interactions with Mayor Mike Ogwal Achonga during a fundraising event in Busia. He said, “That is the Mike I know, that is the Mike we did politics together,” according to Hon. MP/UPC party president Akena Jimmy Michael.
Leaders from across Northern Uganda joined fellow mourners in Lango sub-region at Ayer in Ngetta for a dignified send-off of the departed leader.
On Friday, President Museveni made a donation of ten (10) million shillings via the Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, to the family of the deceased.
