In the Revolution Hackathon Uganda competition held over three months, students specializing in Artificial Intelligence (AI) at International Business, Science and Technology (ISBAT) University were awarded a cash prize of Shs11.1 million. This accomplishment came amidst stiff competition, with 400 applications vying for the top spot. Ultimately, 16 teams, each comprised of four students from various universities and companies, were chosen as finalists. These teams underwent extensive coaching and mentorship from July to September 2023.

The challenge was initiated by Total Energies Uganda, in collaboration with OutBox Uganda, and it tasked participants with proposing innovative ideas utilizing data related to Kampala city’s road infrastructure, electricity distribution, and traffic networks. The goal was to identify optimal locations for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points throughout Kampala, in preparation for the emerging electric vehicle technology in Uganda and Africa.

The winning team, consisting of third-year semester five students named Martin Kenyi, Eric Mathew Luse, Joshua Bwengye, and Jonathan Lokpatchu, all pursuing Bachelors of Science in Artificial Intelligence, devised a solution using artificial intelligence. They employed a genetic automatic algorithm rooted in the theory of natural selection. This algorithm generated random points across major roads in Kampala, with specific constraints to ensure proximity to power line distribution and fuel stations. This approach aimed to facilitate efficient EV charging infrastructure placement.

Joshua Bwengye, a member of the winning team, highlighted the rigorous nature of the hackathon, which lasted for just three days without any breaks. He emphasized how this intense competition allowed the team to translate their theoretical knowledge into practical solutions that would benefit Ugandans. The adaptability of their artificial intelligence algorithm, which considers factors like parking spaces and amenities at fuel stations, sets the groundwork for scalability beyond Kampala in the future.

Mr. Jimmy Obira, a lecturer specializing in Internet of Things (IoT) and Embedded Systems at ISBAT University, pointed out that modern education in fields like AI and IoT addresses the challenges and opportunities presented by the fourth industrial revolution. This revolution combines cutting-edge technologies and automation, which is poised to transform various industries. He noted that AI has the potential to automate industrial processes and redefine the labor market. This transformation would lead to increased productivity and efficiency within companies and institutions.

One of the opportunities arising from the industrial revolution is data science, which involves processing data from various sources and sensors to extract meaningful insights. The ISBAT University team harnessed AI algorithms to work with large datasets, contributing to the realization of these new opportunities.

Pradeep Kumar, the Academic Registrar of ISBAT University, emphasized that AI education instills a sense of pan-Africanism in Ugandan youth. He expressed that the university’s vision aligns with the advancement of STEM education, ensuring students are prepared for the global employment and entrepreneurial market, ultimately shaping the future of Uganda and Africa.

ISBAT University’s victory in the Total Energies Uganda hackathon showcases Uganda’s potential as it embraces the power of artificial intelligence and innovation. This achievement not only signifies academic excellence but also sets the stage for a brighter future driven by technology and innovation.
