Winnie Byanyima, the spouse of seasoned opposition leader Dr. Kiiza Besigye, has once again spoken about her previous relationship with President Museveni, describing it as a typical relationship that came with its own difficulties. It is widely known that the pair had a romantic relationship in the 1980s, with Museveni even expressing a desire to marry her, but her father, the late Mzee Boniface Byanyima, intervened.

Critics have frequently brought this up to unsettle the UNAIDS Executive Director, yet it appears to be of little concern to her. During a recent political discussion on NBS TV, veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda mentioned the relationship, although Winnie was not present. She later took to her X account to suggest that if Mwenda and others find the relationship so significant, they should look out for her upcoming book for more details.

In an exclusive interview with Next Radio, Winnie spoke again about this past relationship. She acknowledged that it was a part of her life that occurred, and she does not wish to deny it. Additionally, she mentioned that Museveni was someone she had seen frequently as a visitor in her home, and whatever transpired between them is something that has already happened and cannot be changed. However, she emphasized that those who believe she loses sleep over these taunts are entirely mistaken.

“It was a normal relationship with President Museveni. It had some challenges, and I left it, but it is not relevant to the political discussion,” she said.

Meanwhile, Winnie asserted that she possesses credible information regarding President Museveni’s attempts on Dr. Kiiza Besigye’s life over the years, and she plans to reveal it soon. She also stated that Dr. Kiiza Besigye has been the most consistent and critical voice for the past 25 years.

He is trusted and has shown that he stands firm in his beliefs, not wavering from them. She expressed her conviction that Dr. Kiiza Besigye is the most credible opposition figure against President Museveni, rendering him a target.

Moreover, Byanyima praised the Supreme Court ruling for not only safeguarding Dr. Kiiza Besigye’s life but also protecting many soldiers from injustices.

“Besigye has liberated members of our UPDF. From what I understand, many have been dragged to the court martial for flimsy cases.”

Byanyima also added that “General Museveni is old. He is over 80 years old. He seems to be getting slower and slower, and thinking about what will happen after him.

It also seems he is trying to make way for his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.”
