Kisoro district leaders expressed conflicting views regarding the development of the Kigezi Industrial Park in Kibaya, Rukundo Town Council, during the district’s end-of-year party on Monday, December 30, 2024.
The party, sponsored by Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) Executive Director Robert Mukiza, brought to light differing opinions on the park’s progress.
Bufumbira North MP, John Kamara, while thanking Mukiza for his support, expressed concern over the slow pace of development at the park. He lamented the delays by UIA despite the district council’s resolution to hand over 620 acres of land for the project. Kamara emphasized the impact on livestock farmers who were displaced, hoping for the park’s immediate commencement. He threatened to push for a review of the land handover if progress remained stagnant.
“I cannot keep quiet,” Kamara declared. “The district council will revisit the resolution. If Kisoro misses out this year, we must secure progress next year, one way or another.”
However, Kisoro District LCV Chairperson Abel Bizimana clarified that Mukiza’s presence at the party was primarily to celebrate with the district and not to discuss investment matters.
“People keep wondering why we’re called for refreshments,” Bizimana said. “Mukiza is here as a friend, not as the UIA head. For investment inquiries, visit his office.”
This statement further fueled Kamara’s frustration. He questioned the significance of his “patron” title if the people of Kisoro weren’t benefiting from the UIA, despite their land contribution.
UIA Executive Director Robert Mukiza acknowledged the concerns raised by the MP. He stated that the feasibility study for the park was complete and that efforts were underway to secure financing. He urged all stakeholders to collaborate in pushing for the park’s development.
“We need industrialization in Kigezi,” Mukiza emphasized. “Let us work together to ensure the Kigezi park receives the necessary funding.”
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including former Inspector General of Police, Gen. Edward Kale Kayihura (Rtd).
