Agago, Uganda – Agago West constituency in Agago District, located in East Acholi, is heating up politically, and there is already a sense of panic among NRM aspirants in the area. A fresh face in the political race, Jimmy Akasa Mokili, is now a contender for the position of Member of Parliament (MP) under the mighty NRM ticket.
As the race intensifies, many political figures in the area are scrambling to secure their positions for the 2026 elections in Agago West constituency.
Akasa, a retired military officer who fought the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in his constituency between 2000 and 2009, is gaining significant political momentum in Arum, Lira Palwo, Lamiya, Geregere, and Agengo sub-counties.
In an interview with Ankole Times, Akasa emphasized that Agago West, despite being small, requires a leader with a clean heart to foster development. He also made an unexpected biblical reference, quoting Isaiah 6:8, describing his political ambition as a divine calling to serve as a potential political messenger for Agago West from 2026 to 2031. Akasa stresses the need for quality education, scholarships, and balanced development across all the sub-counties, particularly in service delivery.
Santin, a 50-year-old woman from Lira Palwo Town Council, assured Akasa that he is the right person for the job, citing his clear agenda on upgrading health facilities and recruiting and deploying more health workers.
A 42-year-old man from Obolokome in Agengo decried the poor state of roads in the constituency, particularly the deteriorating bridge linking Agengo Sub-county to Beliko, Acuru, and other areas.
Meanwhile, a woman from Geregere Sub-county, identified only as Alice, expressed her excitement about meeting a person who knows God, believing Akasa would bring a new kind of leadership to the 12th Parliament of Uganda.
A 29-year-old youth from Arum Sub-county emphasized the need for someone who is well-exposed and, above all, able to lobby within NRM leadership to address issues such as fixing the culvert bridge from Omot to Kazikazi and addressing drainage problems at the “Wicomp” stream in Arum Sub-county.
An LC1 chairperson from Lamiya Sub-county criticized certain unnamed leaders in Agago for intentionally ignoring voters’ calls, particularly in urgent matters affecting the community.
Agago West is currently represented by Hon. Ricky Richard Anywar (NRM), and several aspirants from various political parties, including UPC and FDC, are busy consulting with voters as they prepare to contest for the same seat in the upcoming election.
