President Yoweri Museveni has reassured Ugandans that the country will remain stable during the January 15, 2026 general elections, urging citizens to go out and vote peacefully and ignore calls for disorder or confrontation.
Speaking to journalists in Kisozi on December 17, Museveni warned against attempts to destabilize the country through unrest, saying such efforts would fail. He dismissed claims that security forces could be overwhelmed, cautioning that such rhetoric lacks foresight and endangers lives.
“Don’t listen to Robert Kyagulanyi; his comments about our security lack foresight. His claim that there are not enough soldiers to match rioters is misguided. One soldier carries 120 bullets — do the math. Uganda cannot be destabilised, and anyone who attempts it will live to regret,” Museveni said.
The President’s remarks come amid heightened political tension following recent statements by National Unity Platform (NUP) president and presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, who while campaigning in Kawempe urged supporters to rise up and overwhelm security forces, arguing that the population outnumbers them.
Museveni emphasized that elections are decided through the ballot, not through chaos, and said the role of security agencies is to protect voters and ensure the electoral process proceeds without disruption. He reiterated that his message throughout the campaign has remained consistent: Ugandans should vote and then return home.
The call has been echoed by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who recently urged voters to cast their ballots and leave polling stations promptly to avoid unnecessary tension. Security deployment has since been increased across the country ahead of polling day.
Museveni concluded by encouraging high voter turnout, saying participation strengthens democracy, while peace and order safeguard Uganda’s stability and future.
