Haba Na Haba Food Bank Uganda has launched the 1 Billion Meals Endowment Campaign, an initiative aimed at delivering more than 1,760,000 meals to food-insecure households across the country.
The campaign supported by Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), the Food Banking Regional Network (FBRN), the Egyptian Food Bank, and the Government of the United Arab Emirates was unveiled at St. James Bbiina Catholic Parish in Kampala.
According to Haba Na Haba, the initiative will focus on supporting orphanages, refugees, people with disabilities, and low-income families facing rising living costs. Each food package is designed to sustain a household for at least one month.“We have been doing different kinds of initiatives since 2021. We give food that we get from the market to NGOs that deal with vulnerabilities, people with autism, orphans, elderly, single-headed families,” said Jessica Bagenda, CEO of Haba Na Haba Food Bank Uganda.
Bagenda added that the organization plans to distribute 50,100 food boxes, with 2,550 boxes already being delivered. She said food recovery continues daily to supplement nutritional gaps 1,200 kg of food per day rescued from markets.
She noted the total consignment is valued at US$142,000, meant to support vulnerable households consisting on average of five people.
Representatives from the UAE Embassy emphasized that the initiative is part of ongoing global humanitarian efforts. “This is a continuous initiative that is worldwide. This is humanity. The distribution is for all parts of Uganda to the vulnerable,” said Bukenya Mohammed Shaban, Chief of Protocol and Translation at the UAE Embassy in Kampala-Bujumbura.
Haba Na Haba Food Bank Uganda continues food recovery and redistribution efforts across the country, working within regional food security programs to reduce waste and strengthen support systems for those most affected by hunger.
Brand ambassador Sam Bagenda urged continued support for vulnerable communities. “There is nothing as good as helping someone who has lost hope regain it. If there is anyone fighting hunger in the world, you appreciate them,” he said.
The food bank says the campaign will continue throughout multiple districts as part of broader efforts to curb hunger and address the country’s rising food insecurity.
