President Yoweri Museveni has commended Matongo Wood Works Company Limited for reviving Uganda’s cultural heritage through the production of high-quality traditional wooden household items.
During a visit to the Mbale State Lodge on Sunday, President Museveni, together with his daughter Natasha Karugire, met the founders, Ms. Stella Teromu and Ms. Elizabeth Karunga, and viewed their collection of orutatika (wooden bowls) and entatika (unbreakable utensils).
“I congratulate Matongo Wood Works for reviving our African heritage through their production of strong, durable, and authentic utensils like orutatika and entatika,” President Museveni said. “These are not just art; they are quality, identity, and pride. Imported items are weak and short-lived, but Matongo is restoring cultural pride that had been eroded by foreign products.”
The President noted that the company’s creativity is bringing back traditional items like esiwani, ebakuri, and entsimbo, which once defined Ugandan homes. He reiterated the importance of supporting local producers who reduce dependence on imported plastics and silicone products.
Matongo Wood Works’ work aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to boost local industries, promote cultural heritage, and encourage economic self-reliance. President Museveni’s visit highlights his continued commitment to supporting Ugandan manufacturers and celebrating homegrown craftsmanship.
