Uganda has officially launched a remarkable 30-day electric mobility expedition, sending the home-built Kayoola E-Coach 2025 on a 13,000-kilometre trip across six African countries. The expedition begins in Uganda and will move through Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, Eswatini and finally South Africa, carrying a strong message of innovation, ambition and national pride.

The 13-metre electric coach, designed and built by Kiira Motors Corporation, will be home to a team of 42 engineers, technicians and support staff as they showcase what Uganda’s growing automotive industry is capable of. The bus can travel up to 500 kilometres on a single charge, making it suitable for long-distance travel while producing zero emissions.

During the flag-off ceremony in Kampala, the Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, expressed the significance of the mission, saying, “As we flag off this historic expedition, we are sending a message to the world: Uganda believes in its people, its technology, and Africa’s capacity to shape a sustainable future.” His words captured the pride and determination behind this project, which aims not only to display the vehicle but to inspire confidence in African-made products.

Dr. Monica Musenero, the Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, reminded the team of the responsibility they carry, saying they were not just travelling with a bus, but with a symbol of Uganda’s creativity and resilience. She encouraged them to take the country’s story of innovation across the continent.

The expedition is supported by the Government of Uganda, Kiira Motors Corporation and MTN Uganda, which is providing digital support throughout the journey. Their combined efforts highlight a growing belief that Uganda can build, innovate and compete within the global technology space.

As the Kayoola E-Coach begins its long journey southward, it represents more than a test of distance. It stands as proof that Uganda is stepping confidently into the future—showing Africa and the world that homegrown ideas can travel far, succeed and inspire a new generation of innovators.
