31 Suspects, Including Military Personnel and Civilians, Detained for Alleged Coup Plot

Makindye, Uganda –The General Court Martial in Makindye has remanded 31 individuals, including police officers, soldiers, and pastors, for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government.

Among the accused are Captain Denish Oola Oyaa, an operations training officer attached to the sixth Tank Battalion, Lieutenant Benjamin Oduru, a staff officer, Warrant Officer two Oryek Sunday Jenaro, a tank engine technician, Sergeant Bernard Moris Leku, a deserter formerly attached to the Field Engineering Unit, and Corporal John Elatu.




Joining them are civilians, including Judith Angwech, a pastor from Alebtong district, Simon Oyoma, a pastor from Soroti City, and Daniel Owitti, a social worker from Adjumani District.




The suspects have been charged with treason under section 129 (a) of the UPDF Act, 2005.




The court’s chairman, Brig Robert Mugabe Freeman, ordered the military personnel to be remanded at Makindye military prison, while the civilians were sent to Kigo prison until January 22, 2024, when the case will be mentioned.

This case highlights the potential for instability in Uganda and raises concerns about the security of the state. The government has urged the public to remain calm and vigilant as the investigation into the alleged coup plot continues.

The General Court Martial is expected to provide further updates on the case as it progresses.
