Okidi Patrick, Obongi – The commander of the 503 Brigade, Colonel Robert Mugabe Kochi, convened an urgent security meeting in Obongi district to address a series of attacks targeting South Sudanese refugees in the area’s settlements.

Chaired by Obongi Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, who also heads the district security committee, the meeting brought together key stakeholders including:

  • Denis Elyebu, District Intelligence Officer (DISO)
  • Habiba Furaha Umuhoza, Assistant RDC
  • Graciano Nkurunziza, District Police Commander (DPC)
  • Lutalo, Officer in Charge of Palorinya Police Base Camp

  • OPM officials
  • Chairpersons of refugee welfare councils from Obongi’s settlements

RDC Mpimbaza Hashaka emphasized that the meeting’s primary goal was to develop strategies for eliminating insecurity within the refugee settlements. He urged refugees to collaborate with security agencies and local leaders to identify and report individuals responsible for creating unrest.

On Sunday night, unidentified gunmen fatally shot Wani Alfred, a 55-year-old Kuku, and injured Samuel Kweji, a 33-year-old Kuku, both residents of Keguru Zone 1 refugee settlement in Palorinya sub-county, Obongi district.

These incidents follow the recent killing of another refugee at a shop in Belamering trading center, Itula sub-county, and a separate case where a refugee disarmed a police officer in Morobi and fatally shot a fellow refugee.
