Lira District, Uganda – A student from Faith Secondary School in Lira City made a significant discovery on the morning of Friday, March 14, 2025, when they found an SMG firearm, No. UG PSO 56S 4100382 14317, with two rounds in a small magazine.

The weapon was hidden in a bush near the football pitch of Ireda Primary School, located in Ireda Lumumba Cell, Ireda East Ward, Lira City East.

According to Captain Edrin Mawanda, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) 5th Division Public Information Officer, the student promptly informed the Head Teacher, who then alerted the security forces.

The firearm was subsequently handed over to the UPDF 103 Battalion in Lira City for further investigation.

Major General Keith Katungi, the 5th Division Commander, expressed his appreciation to the local population for their ongoing cooperation with security forces in maintaining peace and security in Northern Uganda.

“We commend the student and Faith Secondary School for their vigilance. Citizens play a crucial role as the eyes and ears of the community by reporting suspicious activity, abandoned arms, and equipment, thus enhancing security, peace, and stability,” said Major General Katungi.

He further emphasized that the Uganda People’s Defence Forces remain committed to protecting Ugandans and their property.
