On August 14, 2024, Kenya Railways introduced its new premium class coaches on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger trains. The first passengers to experience this service were over 20 African ambassadors based in Nairobi, who traveled from Nairobi to Mombasa.
Philip Mainga, the Managing Director of Kenya Railways Corporation, welcomed the ambassadors on board, informing them that they were the first to use the newly launched premium class. He encouraged them to relax and enjoy refreshments before dinner.
The new premium class service is priced at 12,000 Kenyan Shillings (about $80) for a one-way trip for adults and 6,000 Kenyan Shillings (about $40) for children aged 3 to 11. A return ticket costs 20,000 Kenyan Shillings (about $130). This new service aims to enhance passenger comfort and experience between Nairobi and Mombasa.
Transport Principal Secretary Mohamed Daghar, who attended the launch, announced plans to extend SGR Phase 2B from Naivasha to Kisumu, covering 362 kilometers, with a branch line to Kisumu Port. Phase 2C will extend from Kisumu to Malaba over 106 kilometers.
Dr. Abraham Korir Sing’oei emphasized the importance of connectivity for development and transformation, aligning with the vision of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He stressed that without connectivity, the goals of AfCFTA cannot be fully realized.
According to Kenya Railways, the premium class coaches offer various enhancements, including more space, entertainment options, and additional storage for baggage. These coaches feature automated window shutters, rotatable seats, and designated shoe storage.
Passengers traveling in the premium class in the morning will receive a full breakfast and lunch, while those traveling in the evening will enjoy dinner and continuous refreshments throughout the journey.
The new service includes four premium coaches, ten economy coaches, one dining coach, and one power car, all designed to provide a high level of comfort and an exceptional travel experience. Each new premium coach has 28 seats, offering more legroom compared to standard carriages.
Earlier this year, SGR increased its ticket prices due to rising fuel costs. The cost for an economy class trip from Nairobi to Mombasa has risen from 1,000 Kenyan Shillings (about $7) to 1,500 Kenyan Shillings (about $10). First-class fares have increased from 3,000 Kenyan Shillings (about $20) to 4,500 Kenyan Shillings (about $30) per adult.
SGR continues to operate express passenger and cargo services from Nairobi to Mombasa and offers an inter-county service with stops at Athi River, Emali, Kibwezi, Mtito Andei, Voi, Miasenyi, and Mariakani.
