A Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) officer was apprehended for allegedly stealing a woman’s mobile phone in Mombasa. The officer, who was stationed in Turkana, reportedly snatched a phone valued at Ksh25,000, raising concerns about his conduct as a detective.
The victim explained to the police that the theft occurred when she was answering a call while purchasing groceries from a street vendor. Following investigations by Mombasa detectives, it was discovered that the perpetrator was a colleague attached to Turkana, working as a Tuktuk driver.
The incident occurred at 9 a.m., and the suspect was taken into custody. During questioning at Central Police Station, the individual was found in possession of a police badge bearing the name Said Omar Mazima. He identified himself as a DCI officer affiliated with the Kibish DCI unit in Turkana County.
Mazima allegedly threatened the fruit vendor who attempted to confront him after the phone theft. He reportedly threatened to harm the vendor and drove the tuk-tuk recklessly, endangering the vendor’s safety.
The reason for the officer’s presence in Mombasa was unclear, and it is uncertain whether he was on holiday or resides in the coastal city.
This incident has raised concerns among Kenyans about the behavior of some officers in the police force, which some have linked to an increase in crime rates.
