Apostle Ezekiel Odero from the New Life Prayer Centre discussed the source of his wealth during a Senate hearing. He attributed his riches to the funding received by the church, emphasizing that the vehicles and houses he uses are all owned by the church. The hearing took place on Friday, October 13, 2023, as part of the Senate Ad-hoc committee’s investigation into the Shakahola deaths.
During his testimony, Odero provided a list of properties owned by the church, including an international school located in Kilifi County. He highlighted that this school boasts an Olympic-standard swimming pool and modern laboratories, which he claimed surpass the quality of some university facilities in Kenya.
Additionally, Odero revealed that the church operates a modern hotel that serves its members on a 24-hour basis. He noted that this facility was primarily constructed to cater to church members. The church has also contributed to the community by constructing a nine and a half-acre dam, serving as a water source for Kilifi residents.
In a humble request, Odero invited the government to verify the information he shared. Furthermore, he explained that the church sponsors over 200 children who are currently attending various secondary schools.
When questioned about his personal wealth, Odero denied allegations of using congregants’ funds to acquire personal assets. He clarified that he engages in chicken-rearing to support his children’s education and personal projects, ensuring that church funds are not utilized for personal gain.
The Senate Ad-hoc committee, chaired by Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana, is investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths of followers of the controversial Good News International Church preacher, Paul Mackenzie, who is presently in police custody. Odero was invited to the committee to clarify his business dealings with Mackenzie and affirmed that he had purchased a TV station from Mackenzie, while distancing himself from any further associations with the controversial preacher.
The Friday hearing marked the final public session of the committee, and the report of their investigations is scheduled for release next Thursday.
