The destruction of political symbols during protests reflects broader frustrations and calls for responsive governance.

In Kericho, a group of protesters took down a banner bearing the name of President William Ruto as part of their demonstration against the Finance Bill, 2024.

The protesters joined others across Kenya who oppose the bill, gathering in solidarity against what they perceive as burdensome financial legislation.

The banner had been erected before last year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kericho and had remained in place since then. Additionally, symbols associated with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party were also targeted during the protest.

The demonstration began at Moi’s Gardens around 9 AM, where demonstrators assembled to exert pressure on the Kenya Kwanza government to withdraw the controversial Finance Bill, 2024.

Central to their protest was a demand for President William Ruto to intervene and convince his Members of Parliament to reject the Finance Bill.

“We will not stop protesting until the government listens to us and drops the Finance Bill,” asserted one of the young demonstrators, reflecting the determination of the group.

Throughout the protest, the youths voiced their resolve to continue their demonstrations until their demands are met.

While the police allowed the protesters to express their grievances, they emphasized the necessity for the demonstrators to adhere to legal boundaries and maintain order.
