President Yoweri Museveni has expressed strong support for the Pan-African visa-free tourism initiative, underscoring Uganda’s commitment to fostering continental unity and economic growth through tourism.
The President met with a delegation from Ghana leading the Trans-Africa Tourism & Unity Campaign, which advocates for simplified travel procedures for Africans. The campaign argues that easing visa requirements across the continent would significantly boost tourism, trade, and cultural exchange, while strengthening bonds among African nations.
Museveni highlighted that Uganda has long championed African integration as a key driver of economic development. He pointed out that removing barriers such as visas can unlock opportunities for intra-African business, tourism, and knowledge exchange. By making it easier for Africans to travel freely within the continent, countries can leverage their collective resources, promote investment, and enhance regional stability.
The President emphasized that tourism is more than leisure; it is a strategic tool for economic growth, job creation, and cultural diplomacy. He encouraged African nations to collaborate closely on policies that make travel seamless, adding that such initiatives would benefit not only the tourism sector but also agriculture, trade, and education through stronger regional connections.
During the meeting, the delegation presented the potential of visa-free travel to boost local economies and foster unity, noting that tourists from within Africa often spend significantly more when able to travel freely. Museveni applauded these efforts, describing them as forward-thinking steps toward realizing a more integrated and prosperous Africa.
The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) has pledged its support for the campaign, recognizing that increased intra-African tourism would position Uganda as a hub for cultural and adventure tourism, while also contributing to the continent’s broader economic development.
In closing, Museveni reiterated his long-standing belief that Africa’s strength lies in its unity and cooperation, urging governments to embrace initiatives that promote free movement, mutual understanding, and shared prosperity across the continent.
