A farmer in Buseesa village, Kaisekenkere Parish, Matale Sub-County in Kibaale District, has revealed that he annually earns a net profit of UGX 238 million from just one and a half acres of land. Dr. Richard Lubega, a member of the Buseesa Community Development Organisation (BCDO) Demonstration farm, engages in livestock and poultry activities, including piggery, goats, cows, poultry, and fishponds. The farm follows sustainable and efficient farming practices to maximize production.

Lubega shared that he collects UGX 143 million from the piggery unit alone, where he currently raises 78 pigs. He specializes in rearing Camborough breeds, known for their prolific reproduction and rapid growth. These pigs are fed a diet of maize bran mixed with pig concentrate, and piglets are provided with weaner pellets. Lubega maintains good hygiene in the pig housing by using an inorganic microorganism approach, preventing unpleasant odors.

Through this successful project, Lubega has managed to build a comfortable home, provide his children with quality education, and construct a Health Centre III. His farm has also benefited the community, as people visit for cross-breeding and knowledge sharing, contributing to the area’s growth and development.

The revelation occurred during the Greater Kibaale Agricultural Expo, aimed at changing Ugandans’ mindset about agriculture and promoting improved farming methods for higher yields.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja visited Lubega’s farm, encouraging locals in the district to embrace objective farming to alleviate poverty. She emphasized the need to utilize available land resources, create a difference, and develop profitable projects like poultry and piggery.

Finance Minister Matia Kasaija, during the tour, emphasized the importance of being visionary when investing in agriculture and assured farmers of market opportunities for their products.

The Farmers Mobilisation and Education Campaign, initiated following President Museveni’s directive to the Prime Minister, aligns with the government’s socioeconomic transformation agenda and Parish Development Model. The campaign focuses on high-value crop growing for small landholders and extensive agriculture for larger landowners.
