The police in Mbarara have disclosed that they are currently searching for the remains of a student who drowned in River Rwizi. The victim has been named as Nuwamanya Yokana, a student at Ankole Institute.

Reports indicate that Nuwamanya drowned over the weekend. Samson Kasasira, the spokesperson for Rwizi Police, stated that Nuwamanya and his friends went swimming after playing pool at Kirehe Trading Centre, where the tragic incident occurred.

He further mentioned that this marks the fourth person the river has taken this year, urging caution for those navigating its waters.

“As the police, we are diligently searching for Nuwamanya Yokana’s body. He was a student at Ankole Institute and, unfortunately, drowned while swimming with friends in the river over the weekend.

Despite our efforts, we have yet to recover his body. We advise everyone to exercise caution near the river, as water levels have risen significantly during this rainy season. He is not the only person to have lost their life in the river this year,” Kasasira remarked.

Attempts to contact Ankole Institute, as well as his friends and family, by this publication were unsuccessful by the time of reporting. Nonetheless, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.

With the holiday season approaching, these water bodies are likely to become popular gathering spots for visitors and locals seeking leisure. Therefore, it is important to remain vigilant while enjoying these areas to avoid accidents.
