Rt. Rev. Stephen Kazimba Mugalu, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, has urged politicians to avoid resorting to violence when addressing differing political opinions.

His comments come as the nation approaches the 2026 general elections, with 2025 poised to be a year filled with electoral campaigning, likely leading to increased tension.

The Archbishop emphasized the necessity for everyone to honor one another’s political beliefs to prevent violent incidents arising from the current political environment.

He delivered this message during the New Year’s service at All Saints Church in Nakasero, which he led.

“As we embark on campaigns leading up to the 2026 elections, I urge you to show respect for one another, for we are all Ugandans. Do not perceive those from other political parties as inferior. We are united as Ugandans.”

“Everyone has the right to affiliate with any political party they choose. We must refrain from actions that could harm others’ lives. I also urge security forces to uphold the dignity of individuals. Additionally, I call on religious leaders to promote the gospel in a manner that honors God, rather than fostering division. Lastly, I invite everyone to respect each other, regardless of tribal affiliation. We must honor each other and prioritize God, as He is the one who appoints leaders,” stated the Archbishop.

Col. Edith Nakalema, who was present among the attendees, mentioned that this new year holds great promise, particularly from the government. She expressed that the government aims to approach service with revitalized enthusiasm, determination, and passion, aiming for success in the coming year.

Furthermore, she expressed that this year will be one of renewed hope, victory, success, and prosperity in all facets of life. It is anticipated that tensions will begin to escalate as electoral campaigns commence in the coming months at various levels.
