His Highness Umukuka III Jude Mike Mudoma, the cultural leader of the Bamasaaba people, has appointed Mzee Dominic Wetang’ula as the Chief Advisor to the institution.
Mzee Dominic Wetang’ula is the father of Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, the current Speaker of the Kenyan Parliament.
According to Hon. Steven Masiga, spokesperson of the Bamasaaba cultural institution, the newly appointed Chief Advisor will play a key role in guiding the Umukuka, particularly on matters of cultural integrity and tradition.
“Rt. Hon. Dominic Wetang’ula will be solely responsible for advising the Umukuka whenever he veers off the cultural radar. When we go off track as a cultural institution, he will step in and guide His Highness,” said Masiga.
He added that the Chief Advisor’s role is broad and largely discretionary but emphasized his confidence in Mzee Wetang’ula’s wisdom and experience.
“I trust he will offer His Highness very invaluable counsel to the administration of the Bukuka,” Masiga said.
The Chief Advisor is also expected to act as the guardian of the kingdom’s cultural heritage, ensuring that traditional beliefs and customs are preserved and respected.
Mzee Dominic Wetang’ula is widely respected within the Bamasaaba community and is known to wield significant spiritual and cultural authority. During the passing of Umukuka I Emeritus Wilson Wamimbi last year, Mzee Wetang’ula was the only individual permitted by the current Umukuka and the Government of Uganda to view the sealed body, which had been handled by Uganda Funeral Services.
His connection to the Bamasaaba institution dates back to Umukuka I, having served in various capacities over the years. A teacher by profession, Mzee Wetang’ula hails from Bubutu, Namisindwa District, though his forefathers migrated to Kenya in the late 1890s.
