Kampala, Uganda – Airtel Africa has announced a partnership with SpaceX to bring Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet to customers across several African countries, including Uganda.
According to the telecom company, SpaceX has already secured operating licenses in 9 of the 14 countries where Airtel Africa operates. Licensing for the remaining five countries is currently underway.
The partnership aims to significantly boost Airtel Africa’s next-generation satellite connectivity offerings, particularly in underserved and remote communities. Officials say the collaboration will improve access to digital services for enterprises, schools, health centers, and socio-economic initiatives in rural parts of the continent.
Airtel Africa also plans to expand rural coverage through cellular backhauling, leveraging Starlink’s satellite network to strengthen mobile and internet infrastructure.
Both companies have expressed interest in exploring further collaboration to promote digital inclusion across the continent. SpaceX is also expected to benefit from Airtel Africa’s ground infrastructure and local market experience.
Sunil Taldar, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa, emphasized the strategic value of the partnership:
“We remain deeply committed to our vision to enrich the lives of the people of Africa. This partnership with SpaceX is a significant step in demonstrating our continued commitment to advancing Africa’s digital economy through strategic investments and partnerships.
Next-generation satellite connectivity will ensure that every individual, business, and community has reliable and affordable voice and data connectivity—even in the most remote and currently underserved parts of Africa.”
Chad Gibbs, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations at SpaceX, welcomed the deal, highlighting the growing footprint of Starlink in Africa:
“We are very excited to work with Airtel to bring the transformative benefits of Starlink to the African people in new and innovative ways. Starlink is already available in more than 20 African markets.
This agreement with Airtel highlights how, once licensed, we welcome the opportunity to join forces with key industry leaders to ensure as many people as possible can benefit from Starlink’s presence. The Airtel team has played a pivotal role in Africa’s telecom story, and working with them to complement our direct offering makes great sense for our business.”
Last month, a Starlink delegation met with Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni at State Lodge Nakasero. The president welcomed the team and expressed support for the initiative.
With Starlink’s entry into Uganda’s internet market, industry observers expect a significant shift in the country’s connectivity landscape, especially in rural and underserved areas.
