Owning a car comes with the responsibility of maintenance and repairs. While some car owners may have basic knowledge about vehicle mechanics, many rely on professional mechanics for more complicated issues. Unfortunately, the lack of expertise among car owners creates opportunities for dishonest mechanics to take advantage of them.

In February 2023, Ronald Akampurira experienced a typical scenario where a mechanic suggested unnecessary repairs for her car. Hearing unusual sounds and feeling vibrations in the steering wheel, she visited a garage in Naalya, Kampala. The mechanic proposed replacing four parts, including the steering rack, at a cost of 1.5 million shillings. After negotiations, Ronald opted for a partial repair, which temporarily fixed the issue. However, the problem resurfaced, leading her to seek help from another mechanic recommended by her employer.

Ronald’s experience is not uncommon. Many car owners have fallen victim to dishonest mechanics who exploit their lack of knowledge about car repairs. To protect oneself, it’s essential to understand the mechanics’ proposed repairs and ask questions to ensure transparency.

One common tactic used by mechanics is to create panic by exaggerating minor issues. For example, when water drips from a car’s air conditioner after use, mechanics may claim it indicates a radiator problem that could lead to engine overheating. By fabricating faults and blocking water passages, mechanics deceive car owners into paying for unnecessary repairs.

To avoid falling for such scams, car owners should stick to one trusted garage. Building a relationship with a mechanic who understands the car’s history can prevent unnecessary repairs and save money in the long run.

Another common scam involves the brake system, particularly brake pad replacements. Mechanics may claim brake pads are worn out and urgently need replacement, even if they have sufficient lifespan remaining. By exploiting car owners’ lack of knowledge about brake pad thickness, mechanics profit by selling unnecessary parts.

Similarly, the check engine light often causes panic among car owners, leading to costly repairs. Mechanics may inflate repair costs for minor issues, hoping to capitalize on the car owner’s concern. Investing in a diagnosis tool can empower car owners to identify simple problems and avoid being overcharged by dishonest mechanics.

Additionally, car owners should pay attention to engine oil quality and quantity, as mechanics may use oil-related issues to fabricate faults. By understanding basic indicators of oil condition, such as color and viscosity, car owners can detect dishonesty and make informed decisions.

Lastly, car owners should actively participate in the repair process by requesting written estimates, lists of replaced parts, and explanations of completed repairs. Seeking a second opinion and ensuring clear communication with the mechanic can minimize the risk of falling victim to repair scams.

While not all mechanics are dishonest, car owners must remain vigilant and educated to avoid falling prey to common repair scams. By understanding basic car mechanics and following these tips, car owners can protect themselves from unnecessary expenses and ensure fair treatment when seeking repairs.
