Billionaire steel magnate, Sikander Lalani, celebrated his 79th birthday by announcing the initiation of the construction of a new steel factory on October 4, 2023. The factory, a 150,000-tonnes-per-year cold rolling plant, is part of Roofings Group’s phase 4 expansion at the Kampala Industrial Business Park (KIBP) in Namanve, located on the outskirts of Kampala City.

This expansion marks the fourth phase of growth for the Roofings Group, which began with a $2 million investment in an iron sheets plant in Lubowa back in 2010. Subsequently, the company expanded to include a wire galvanizing plant, a melt shop, and a plastic pipes plant under the Roofings Polypipes subsidiary, all at the Lubowa site. In the third expansion phase, the steel group invested in a 150,000-tonnes-per-year cold rolling mill. By the end of the third phase, the company had invested more than USD 350 million in Uganda and provided employment for over 2,000 individuals.

While the cost of the fourth expansion phase has not been disclosed to the public, construction is being undertaken by China Communications Construction Company Ltd. The project’s architects are Space and Places Ltd, with Roman Consult Ltd serving as the project’s civil and structural engineers. Quantity surveyors for the project are Construction Cost Associates, and L&S Company Ltd has been appointed as the electrical and mechanical engineers.

The new cold rolling mill is expected to begin operations by mid-2024, making Roofings Group the largest and most modern cold-strip complex in East and Central Africa.

In December 2022, Roofings Group entered into a contract with Danieli Group, an Italian equipment supplier to the metal industry. The contract covers the supply of a cold-rolling mill, hot-dip galvanizing equipment, color-coating technology, and a side-trimming line. Danieli Group has stated that the equipment will be ready by mid-2024 for installation. The contract was signed by Sikander Lalani, Chairman, and Founder of Roofings Group, and Giacomo Mareschi, Chief Executive Officer of Danieli Group.

This investment will enable Roofings Group to produce an additional 100,000 tonnes per year of galvanized coils and 50,000 tonnes per year of painted coils, all while maintaining efficiency and ecological responsibility, according to the Danieli Group.

Danieli will supply a complete set of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and automation equipment. The cold-reversing mill will feature advanced automation to ensure impressive thickness tolerances. The hot-dip galvanizing line will include a Danieli Kohler X-jet gas wiping system for uniform coating at 160 m/min.

Additionally, the high-production, color-coating line will employ Danieli Fata Hunter chemical and paint coaters along with prime and finish ovens. Danieli Automation will provide a full electric and automation system, including Level 1 and Level 2 functionalities, to enhance product quality and productivity.

The modular automation architecture applied to these new facilities will simplify management for maintenance engineers and plant operators, according to Danieli’s December 2022 statement.
