- UMA’s Appeal to Government: Land Needed for Modern Showground
In a recent announcement, the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) has stated their intention to construct a new showground in the greater Kampala metropolitan area. The association is seeking the support of the government in providing the necessary land for this project. The current showground in Nakawa, Kampala, is facing challenges due to ongoing construction projects by UMA members, leaving limited space for further development.
UMA Chairperson Mr. Deo Kiyemba revealed this plan during the opening of the 29th annual Uganda International Trade Fair. He explained that the need for a new showground arises from the increasing number of UMA members. Since its establishment in 1992 with 26 members, UMA has grown to include 1504 members, with more joining regularly.
The proposed new showground aims to be state-of-the-art, featuring five-star hotels to accommodate investors and modern showrooms and warehouses that meet international standards. Mr. Kiyemba believes that improved warehouse facilities will contribute to increased exports and, subsequently, the growth of the manufacturing sector.
Mr. Kiyemba called on the government to allocate approximately 60 acres of land to initiate the project. He also cautioned against allocating land in wetlands, citing the example of the Namamve industrial park, part of which was deemed unsuitable for development by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) due to its wetland status.
Vice President Ms. Jessica Alupo, representing President Museveni at the event, assured that the government would work to ensure that manufacturers have access to markets for their products. She commended Ugandan entrepreneurs for their enterprise, resilience, and innovation, as demonstrated by the record-breaking participation of over 1,000 exhibitors at the trade fair.
