President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni yesterday officially inaugurated Hoima City Stadium, marking a major milestone in Uganda’s preparations to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027 alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Museveni said the stadium is clear evidence that Uganda’s development journey is real and visible. He invited critics of government programmes to visit different parts of the country, including Hoima and Lira, to see the results and opportunities being created on the ground.

The President cited recent industrial progress, noting reports that electric buses manufactured by Kira EV travelled by road to South Africa and have already secured an initial order of 450 units. He described this as the kind of practical progress the country has been working towards.

Hoima City Stadium is one of ten sports facilities Uganda is developing ahead of AFCON 2027. The President said the completion of the stadium is a moment of great pride for the country and a sign of Uganda’s readiness to host continental football.

President Museveni, together with First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni, congratulated the Turkish construction company Summa for the work done on the stadium. He said government will continue working with partners to deliver more infrastructure projects that support sports, development and economic growth.

The inauguration was attended by government officials, local leaders and residents of Hoima City, who welcomed the facility as a boost to sports and business in the region.
