Luweero General Hospital’s construction, which commenced in the 2012/2013 financial year, has encountered significant delays, prompting action from the government.

Recognizing the need for both quality and timely completion, Prime Minister Nabbanja Robinah took the decision to entrust the construction of Luweero General Hospital to the UPDF Engineers Brigade. This move aims to expedite the project’s progress and ensure that the community receives the healthcare facility it urgently requires.

The decision to involve the UPDF Engineering Brigade stems from their proven track record in handling large-scale projects. Notably, they successfully managed the construction of the Mandela National Stadium at Namboole, showcasing their capability in delivering complex infrastructure within specified timelines.

With construction of Luweero General Hospital now under the purview of the UPDF Engineers Brigade, stakeholders anticipate a renewed focus on efficiency and quality.

In related UPDF news, the appointment of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba as the new Commander of the Defense Forces (CDF) has been met with acceptance and optimism within the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF). Army Spokesperson Brig. Gen Felix Kulaigye expressed confidence in Gen. Kainerugaba’s capabilities, citing his successful supervision and execution of various military missions in the recent past.

Meanwhile, the Ugandan and Congolese armies have joined forces in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to combat the Allied Democratic Front (ADF) terrorists. Under the operation code named Operation Shujaa, commanders from both armies convened at Luna in the Ituri Province to review the progress of their efforts and strategize for the future.

Led by Commander Land Forces Lieutenant General Kayanja Muhanga, the meeting involved discussions among senior commanders, principal staff officers, and heads of departments of Operation Shujaa. Maj. Bilal Katamba, the UPDF Mountain Division public information officer and Operation Shujaa spokesperson, emphasized that the meeting aimed to address matters pertinent to the operation, including progress, successes, challenges, and the way forward.

Lt Gen. Kayanja Muhanga’s visit to Luna’s operation tactical headquarters was received by Maj. Gen. Dick Olum, the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces’ overall commander of the operation. This meeting is expected to inform strategic leadership discussions in subsequent joint review meetings between the UPDF and the Armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), involving the Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of General Staff of the respective forces.

The joint operation against the ADF, which commenced in November 2021, initially targeted the Semliki sector, resulting in the destruction of ADF strongholds. Subsequent efforts expanded to Sector Four in December 2023, focusing on pursuing remnants of the ADF in the Beni-Komanda road area after significant impact in Mwalika Valley under Sector Three.
