The leaders of Gaba Market, who had been suspended for four months on allegations of fraud, land grabbing, and mismanagement, have been reinstated temporarily. The decision comes as a result of new directives issued by the Minister of Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Minsa Kabanda, following the findings and recommendations of an investigative report from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU).
The SHACU had launched an investigation into the market’s leadership in response to reports of corruption, land seizures, and mismanagement within the market.
These directives were conveyed to the market by the newly appointed Resident City Commissioner (RCC) of Makindye, Mac Bannis Baingana, on October 26, 2023.
The directives from Minister Kabanda include the following key points:
- The town clerk and SHACU will oversee a fresh registration of all vendors in the market.
- The current market leadership is allowed to resume their duties for a period of 14 days.
- Following this 14-day period, elections will be held to select new leadership for the market.
While delivering the directives, RCC Baingana emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and order in the market, warning that any disruptions to the peace would not be tolerated.
