Major Decline in USE Trading as MTN, Umeme Stocks Dominate

USE Market Activity Drops 67%, Umeme and MTN See Major Trades

(Kampala) – The Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) saw a significant decline in equities turnover this week, with a drop of 67.15% compared to the previous week, reaching UGX 2.93 billion.

The Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) recorded a notable decline in trading activity during the past week, with the equities turnover dropping by 67.15%, falling to UGX 2.93 billion from UGX 8.91 billion in the prior week.




Top traded stocks included Umeme, which dominated the market with UGX 2.82 billion in turnover, making up 96.24% of the weekly total, according to data from Crested Capital. Other notable stocks were MTN, which traded UGX 34.42 million, and dfcu Limited, with UGX 29.8 million. Stanbic Holdings saw a smaller turnover of UGX 13.3 million.




Regarding price movements, Quality Chemical Industries Limited (QCIL) saw a modest gain of +1.82%, closing the week at UGX 56 per share. MTN Uganda (MTNU) also experienced a slight increase of +0.95%, reaching UGX 211.99 per share.




On the downside, Umeme’s stock lost -3.45%, ending the week at UGX 420 per share. Uganda Clays Limited also saw a decline of -0.99%, closing at UGX 9.01 per share.

In terms of cross-listed companies, East African Breweries Limited (EABL) posted a gain of +4.28%, while Equity Group Holdings gained +3.81%, and KCB Group saw a +2.16% increase. On the other hand, Nation Media Group dropped -0.52%, Centum Investments lost -0.59%, and Jubilee Holdings Limited declined by -1.69%.

The USE All Share Index (ALSI) finished the week 1.78% higher at 1,192.74 points. Similarly, the C11 Index, which tracks local companies, saw a slight gain of 0.20%, closing at 105.46 index points.
