The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa, has been directed to present a statement outlining the government’s initiatives for raising awareness about minerals. The directive was issued by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa following concerns raised by Kajara County MP, Hon. Michael Timuzigu, regarding conflicts in Ntungamo District due to the recent discovery of lithium.
Deputy Speaker Tayebwa criticized the Energy Ministry for withholding information from residents in mineral-rich communities, leading to conflicts and deceptive land transactions favoring investors over locals. He highlighted the need for sensitizing communities to prevent cheating and ensure transparency in mineral-related activities.
Tayebwa requested the Minister to provide a comprehensive statement next week, specifically on Wednesday, detailing the processes and strategies for educating communities nationwide about minerals.
Hon. Timuzigu expressed dismay over chaos in Ntungamo District, where investors allegedly acquired land at lower prices, leaving locals unaware of whether they were leasing or selling their land. He emphasized the importance of the Energy Ministry’s intervention to offer clear guidance, avoiding further conflicts and ensuring locals understand the true value of their land.
Deputy Attorney General Hon. Jackson Kafuuzi proposed that the Energy Ministry fulfills its mandate by mapping areas with minerals and informing residents about the mineral-rich nature of their land. This, he suggested, would empower individuals to make informed decisions when dealing with their land and potential investors.
