The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has reported a remarkable decrease in the time required to register a business, now averaging between three to four hours. This significant improvement is attributed to the automation of services, with the URSB registrar general, Ms. Mercy Kainobwisho, highlighting the deployment of the Online Business Registration System.

According to the details outlined in the 2022/23 Annual Report, the Online Business Registration System has streamlined the registration process, reducing turnaround time from several days to mere hours. The system, fully integrated with the National Identification and Registration Authority and Uganda Revenue Authority, facilitates seamless registration transactions.

Despite initial challenges, the Online Business Registration System stabilized over time, leading to a notable increase in the uptake of business registration services, which saw an average growth of 58.4 percent. During the reporting period, company registrations were completed within three to four hours, while registering a business name now takes just 30 minutes compared to the previous 24 hours.

Additionally, the registration of legal documents has been expedited to within one hour, with instant searches and document certification further enhancing efficiency.

This advancement has contributed to a 28 percent increase in the number of new companies registered by URSB, rising from 18,614 to 23,789.

While business name reservations experienced a substantial growth of 203 percent, registering business names saw a slight decrease of 2 percent. The report also highlights a significant rise in company dissolutions and voluntary winding-up proceedings, indicating a dynamic business landscape.
