180 Tons of Contraband Destroyed in Luwero

Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has destroyed 180 tons of smuggled goods. The items, including cosmetics, used underwear, beer, wines, spirits, computers, and drugs, were destroyed at Luwero Industries.

“These items were confiscated over a period of more than one year during our enforcement operations. Their estimated tax value exceeds one billion shillings,” said Milton Rahuka, the manager for warehousing in URA’s customs department.

Most of the goods were seized along the borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan, according to Rahuka.

Ian Mukisa, the supervisor for waste management at Luwero Industries, explained that the consignment would be crushed and directly landfilled due to its sensitivity and bulk.

Jane Okello, general manager of Rugarwana Industries, the company contracted to transport the contraband to Nakasongola, said more contraband, including cigarettes, electronics, and soap, is awaiting disposal.

Remarkably, several boxes containing copies of the Holy Quran were found among the contraband but were not destroyed.
