Staff and learners of Busiu SSS have welcomed the upcoming Umukuka Educational Conference, slated for September 2025.

His Highness the Umukuka III of the Bamasaaba people plans to host a sub-national educational conference for all learners in Masaabaland. This was revealed by the spokesperson of the Bamasaaba cultural institution, Mr. Steven Masiga, during his visit to Busiu SSS this morning.

The Headteacher of the school, Mr. Hebert Weboya, welcomed the Umukuka’s delegation to Busiu SSS and pledged to work closely with the cultural institution on matters of education. He also reported an increase in the number of learners since he transferred his services to Busiu SSS from Bududa SSS.

He outlined several projects he has embarked on, including the ongoing construction of the school library, with the sole purpose of promoting a conducive learning environment in the community. Busiu SSS serves learners from Mbale District and neighboring districts such as Tororo and Butaleja.

Mr. Steven Masiga, who arrived at the school around 11 a.m., was received by the Headteacher and interacted with learners during the school parade. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of cultural education in schools.

Combining insights from both culture and law, Mr. Masiga discouraged learners from engaging in negative behaviors such as drug abuse. He noted that individuals who consume narcotics often have limited intellectual capacity, according to various legal studies. He also highlighted that the Penal Code of Uganda imposes strong punishments for crimes such as defilement, rape, theft, and drug consumption.

He appealed to learners to uphold cultural values and conveyed greetings from His Highness the Umukuka III, Jude Mike Mudoma. He urged them not to engage in conduct that would undermine the Umukuka or the institution of Bukuka.
