Lydia Turyasingura, the LC5 female councilor representing Southern Division in Kabale District, has taken a significant step to empower young girls and reduce school dropout rates. She recently donated reusable sanitary pads, pens, and rulers to Mugabi Primary School in Southern Division, Kabale Municipality.
Turyasingura recognized the financial challenges faced by many students, especially girls, who often miss school during their menstrual periods due to lack of access to sanitary pads. By providing reusable pads, she aims to alleviate this burden and ensure that girls can continue their education without interruption.
Amupurire Precious, the Deputy Head Teacher, expressed gratitude for the generous donation, highlighting the impact of menstrual hygiene on girls’ education. “Many girls miss school during their periods, which can significantly affect their academic performance,” she said.
Marion Ninsiima, the Project Manager, emphasized the importance of addressing menstrual hygiene management. She noted that lack of access to sanitary pads can lead to poor hygiene, infections, and ultimately, school dropout.
The beneficiaries, Tusiime Mornica and Caroline Musimenta, were thrilled to receive the reusable pads. They expressed appreciation for the cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution.
This initiative aligns with efforts to promote menstrual hygiene management and empower young girls to reach their full potential. By addressing a critical need, Turyasingura has made a lasting impact on the lives of these students.
