(Kampala) – The General Court Martial has sentenced five men to life imprisonment after they were convicted for the murder of a security guard at a Forex bureau in Rubaga, Kampala. The men, including boda boda cyclists and other civilians, pleaded guilty to the charges of murder and aggravated robbery.

The convicted individuals are Hussein Ssebuma, known as Obote, a boda boda rider from Kawaala; Suleiman Jjuuko, alias Gogolo, a boda boda rider from Kasubi Zone B; David Dumba, a firewood loader from Kasubi; Oman Aula, alias Aula Kasija; and Edison Mpasweimana. They were sentenced on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, after they admitted to their roles in the crime. The charges stem from the killing of Agama Peter, a security guard employed by Wolves Security Group Ltd.

The five men had initially pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were first presented in court on April 22, 2024. However, as the case progressed, they changed their plea to guilty, acknowledging their involvement in the crime. The prosecution presented evidence that on March 19, 2024, at Kabuusu Zone, Rubaga Division, the accused unlawfully killed Agama Peter with malice aforethought. In addition to the murder, they also robbed him of his rifle, which was loaded with nine rounds of live ammunition. The rifle had been issued to the deceased by his employer, Wolves Security Group Ltd.

The accused were also found to have been in possession of a deadly weapon, a Sub Machine Gun, during or immediately after the robbery. This further compounded the seriousness of their actions. In handing down the sentence, Brigadier General Freeman Mugabe, the chairman of the court, emphasized that the offenders’ crimes were both rampant and serious. He stated that their actions warranted harsh punishment to serve as a deterrent to others.

“The offences you committed are rampant and need serious punishment to serve as a lesson to would-be offenders,” Brigadier Mugabe said. He also noted that although the convicts had pleaded guilty, saving the court time and resources, the gravity of their crimes required a stern response.

The court took into account the mitigation factors presented by the defense, as well as the six months and 14 days the convicts had already spent in lawful custody. In the end, each of the five men was sentenced to life imprisonment on each of the charges, with the sentences to run concurrently. The court also informed the convicts that they have the right to appeal the sentence within 14 days if they are not satisfied.
