The Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, and High Court in Uganda are set to close for a week starting February 5 to facilitate the attendance of judges and registrars at the 25th annual judges’ conference in Kampala. Litigants with cases before these courts have been advised to wait until the conclusion of the conference to access services.

The conference, themed “A People-Centered Approach to Justice,” will take place at Serena Hotel. Chief Registrar Sarah Langa Siu stated that the New Law year, beginning on February 9, is expected to witness approximately 500 guests, including Chief Justices from South Sudan, Tanzania, and Somalia.

During a press briefing, Public Relations Officer of the Judiciary, Mr. James Mawanda Ereemye, informed the public about the temporary suspension of court operations due to the conference.

Justice Mike Chibita, Supreme Court Justice and chairperson of the organizing committee, outlined the conference objectives. These include judges sharing views and experiences, addressing case backlog issues, discussing Artificial Intelligence in judgment writing tools, and focusing on health issues such as cancer management and parenting skills for judicial officers. The conference will also cover the management of financial and non-financial resources within the Judiciary.

The grand opening of the twin towers housing the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal will mark the climax of the conference on February 9. President Museveni is expected to be the chief guest at the opening ceremony.

Ms. Langa revealed that Shs110 billion was spent on constructing the twin towers, with strict supervision leading to a saving of Shs16 billion. The commissioning of these buildings is expected to save the Judiciary at least Shs6 billion annually in rent for the two appellate courts.

The twin towers, located above Constitutional Square, boast modern amenities, including customized courthouses, courtrooms, justices’ chambers, a restaurant, gym, childcare centers, and a conference hall.

Additionally, Ms. Langa announced a court open day on February 29 at Kololo Independence Grounds, where higher courts officials will interact with the public, provide information about appeal procedures, and gather feedback from the community. The event is open to the public, encouraging citizens to learn about court operations and interact with justice service providers.
