45 individuals were charged in court on Friday, accused of inciting violence. They were apprehended on Thursday while reportedly preparing to welcome the return of Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, at Entebbe International Airport.
Upon Kyagulanyi’s arrival at Entebbe, law enforcement officers escorted him to his residence in Magere, Wakiso district.
The suspects were brought before Magistrate Elisha Arinitwe at Makindye Grade One Court. According to the prosecution, the accused had gathered at Lubowa in Makindye-Ssabagabo, specifically at the home of the Municipality mayor, Godfrey Ssemwanga. They were allegedly preparing to receive the NUP president as part of a planned ‘One Million March.’
State prosecutor Hope Rukundo informed the court that investigations into the matter were ongoing, and she requested the court to summon those who were still at large.
The magistrate ordered the suspects to be remanded until October 13. He noted that all of them had brought two sureties and identification documents and requested additional time to review the documents.
The accused were represented by their legal counsel, including Enock Kuluba, Ismail Kiweewa, and Brian Nuwamanya, who had applied for bail on behalf of their clients.
