The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has urged the High Court Criminal Division in Kampala to reject the bail application made by Molly Katanga, who stands accused of murdering her husband, businessman Henry Katanga.
Appearing via Zoom link from prison, Molly, represented by her legal team, sought bail before Justice Isaac Muwata, presenting four sureties including relatives and prominent figures.
Her lawyers asserted her innocence and highlighted her health concerns, citing her previous medical treatment and ongoing recovery needs, which they argued couldn’t be adequately addressed in prison.
Molly emphasized her fixed residence and her commitment to cooperate with the legal process, citing her completion of investigations and lack of prior criminal record.
However, the Prosecution, led by Jonathan Muwaganya and Samalie Wakooli, contested the bail application, questioning the suitability of the sureties and alleging potential interference with the case.
Muwaganya raised concerns about one surety’s involvement in obstructing police investigations and the perceived risk of Molly’s release affecting the upcoming trial.
The court also noted Molly’s previous failure to comply with legal proceedings, adding weight to the Prosecution’s arguments against bail.
A ruling on the bail application is scheduled for April 9th or 10th, pending further deliberation.
The Prosecution maintains that Molly Katanga shot her husband dead in November 2023, with additional charges against other individuals allegedly involved in tampering with evidence after the murder.
While four other suspects were granted bail in February 2024, Molly’s bid for release remains in the balance as the legal proceedings continue.
