This case serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding property rights and holding accountable those who engage in illegal land acquisition. The outcome of this trial will not only deliver justice to Henry Kityo but also send a message against land grabbing and unlawful practices in the region.
Eight individuals in Wakiso district faced charges on Thursday, April 25, 2024, for their alleged involvement in land grabbing. The suspects appeared before Court, accused of forcible entry and malicious damage of property. They were remanded to prison until May 8, 2024, pending further legal proceedings.
The arrests were made by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU) in collaboration with the Criminal Investigation Directorate (CID) on April 6, 2024. This joint effort aimed to address cases of land grabbing and restore justice to affected parties.
According to a statement released by SHACU on Thursday evening, the eight suspects, identified as Edith Nabwami, David Kakule, Nathan Junju Kato, Margaret Nakimbugwe, Fredrick Musisi Kantu, Stephen Semakadde, Arafat Ndawula, Siraji Seruyange, and others still at large, were accused of forcibly entering, grading, and subdividing five acres of land in Muyomba Village, Busiro county, Wakiso. The land in question belonged to Henry Kityo.
In an interview with New Vision Online, Henry Kityo expressed his gratitude to SHACU for intervening in his case. He recounted how the accused individuals had caused him frustration and despair, making it difficult for him to access his rightful land.
“I have been frustrated and had lost hope. Thank you SHACU. Grateful that I may finally access justice,” Kityo remarked, reflecting on the impact of the alleged land grabbing on his life and livelihood.
The charges against the eight suspects signify a step towards addressing land-related injustices and restoring the rights of landowners in Wakiso district. The collaboration between SHACU and CID underscores the government’s commitment to combating corruption and ensuring the rule of law prevails.
