Former president of the Uganda Netball Federation (UNF), Sarah Babirye Kityo, is set to appear in court today, February 23, 2024, to face charges related to fraudulent accounting involving shillings 186 million.
Sarah Babirye Kityo, who was charged last year, is expected to appear before principal grade one magistrate Christopher Opit for the mention of her case and an update on the progress of investigations.
The prosecution alleges that between December and November 2021, at UNF, Kityo and others, with intent to defraud, falsified accountability records concerning funds released by the National Council of Sports for the Pent Series and the African National Championship in Namibia.
Kityo has denied the charge, which falls under Section 23 of the Anti-Corruption Act of 2009 as amended. If convicted, she faces a penalty of seven years imprisonment, a fine of shillings 3.7 million, or both. Moreover, a conviction under the Anti-Corruption Act results in a 10-year disqualification from holding public office.
The adjournment of the previous court session was granted to allow the prosecution to conclude its investigations into the matter.
