(Kampala) – The 5 Infantry Division Court Martial has sentenced four soldiers for negligence in protecting military gear, underscoring the importance of adherence to military regulations. Colonel Peter Musherure presided over the court proceedings, where Private Odeyeka Bernard, 31, from the 103 Battalion, received a two-year prison sentence for failing to secure war materials in violation of the UPDF Act.

Private Bernard admitted his guilt during the court session, acknowledging his carelessness in handling military equipment. Alongside him, Lance Corporal Isiko William, Private Niwasasira Denis, and Private Ogwari Charles were also convicted on similar charges for failing to safeguard military assets.

The sentences were handed down following a clear violation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) established by Brigadier General Keith Katungi, the Commander of the 5 Infantry Division. These SOPs mandate that soldiers must always carry their weapons and pouches, a requirement that the convicted soldiers did not follow.

In a related matter, Colonel Musherure also remanded 14 civilians on charges of unlawful possession of arms, ammunition, and other military gear, all in violation of the UPDF Act. Most of the civilians pleaded guilty to the charges.
