Ashiraf Muyinda, known as Nanuga, has been sentenced to 12 years in Kirinya Prisons for his involvement in aggravated robbery. The 43 year old Muyinda was convicted by Justice Dr. Eva Winfred Nabisinde, the resident Judge of Jinja High Court, during a plea bargain session.
The incident leading to Muyinda’s conviction occurred on August 16, 2023, when he robbed Ambrose Isabirye of a motorcycle valued at sh3.6 million. This robbery took place in Wanyange village, Jinja district. Isabirye was returning home from Alshafa Hospital in Mafubira ward when he was attacked. A speeding motorcycle knocked him down, and a passenger on the motorcycle struck him on the head with a metal bar, causing him to lose consciousness. Isabirye was hospitalized and later reported the incident to the police.
During the trial, Muyinda pleaded guilty to the charge of aggravated robbery, admitting to using harmful objects to harm Isabirye. The prosecution highlighted the prevalence of aggravated robbery in the Wanyange area, emphasizing the personal violence involved and the use of deadly weapons.
In his defence, Muyinda expressed remorse for his actions and acknowledged his guilt, opting not to prolong the court proceedings.
In her verdict, Judge Nabisinde sentenced Muyinda to 12 years in Kirinya Prison, with credit for the seven months he had already spent in remand. Plea bargaining, a process where a convict admits to their offense and negotiates a sentence with their lawyers and the state attorney, was employed in this case. All parties involved signed an official statement outlining the agreed-upon sentence, which the judge then endorsed in her ruling.
