The Judiciary has strongly asserted that meddling in court processes undermines the fundamental principle of judicial independence. The statement, issued on January 9, 2024, comes in response to reports indicating that Ntungamo Resident District Commissioner Geofrey Mucunguzi is allegedly interfering in court matters, citing administrative interventions.

According to Judiciary spokesperson James Ereemye, such interference compromises the integrity of the court system and, by extension, the administration of justice. Ereemye emphasized that judicial and institutional independence forms the bedrock of any functional democracy, ensuring courts can adjudicate cases impartially without external pressures.

“Any interference in this process not only jeopardizes cases in court but poses a significant threat to the foundation of our legal system,” Ereemye noted.

He outlined the core function of the Judiciary, which is to administer justice by resolving disputes between individuals and between the state and individuals. Additionally, the Judiciary plays a crucial role in promoting the rule of law and contributing to the maintenance of societal order.

Chief Justice Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo recently emphasized the importance of public discourse and debate while cautioning against infringing upon the Judiciary’s autonomy. He highlighted that attempts to influence court decisions or cast doubt on the credibility of the legal process erode public trust and undermine the essence of justice.

In cases where a court has issued an order, the Chief Justice stressed the need for respect. Dissatisfaction with a court ruling, he noted, should be addressed through legal avenues of redress provided by the law.

Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo called upon all stakeholders, including relevant authorities, to thoroughly investigate any allegations of interference in court processes. He urged them to take appropriate actions to safeguard the independence of the Judiciary, maintaining the rule of law and protecting the rights and liberties of all citizens.
